THE POWER OF EXPERTISE; CORRELATION BETWEEN SUCCESS AND EXPERTISE
On January 15, 2009 an Airbus A320–214 plane took off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. After flying for about 5 miles a flock of Canada geese struck the engines and lost power. A disaster was about to happen with a total of 155 people aboard the now “engineless plane”. For obvious reasons emotional distress and chaos kicked in with the pilot and airhostess’s trying to control the situation giving blurry hopes. Okay…by now everyone in that plane was sure death was coming at them. Little did they know that the plane was in the hands of one expert with over 10,000 hours in the cockpit on that particular AIRBUS A320 plane, was the pilot. At exactly 3:31 pm Chesley Burnett “Sully” Sullenberger III, after looking for alternatives to where to land the plane went for Hudson River. Swiftly he landed it above the water. Everyone was rescued after what seemed as a death sentence.
The question that drove the internet crazy is how he managed to do it, I mean it’s not every day that something like that happens. As the title of this article depicts that “sully” guy was an EXPERT. Researchers have discovered that expertise is a key principle for becoming successful, be it making the millions you yearn for.
Sullenberger earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Air Force Academy. He also earned a master’s degree in industrial psychology from Purdue University in 1973 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1979.
He joined United States Air Force Academy in 1973 where he rose through ranks to become a flight leader and a training officer
Sully had a master’s degree in psychology which he used on that frightful day to come down the passengers and digest the situation to save the day. With over 10,000 hours in the cockpit in deed his time to shine, as an expert, came as a blessing in disguise. He was truly made for that day, he served his PURPOSE! He was invited together with his crew to the inauguration of President Barrack Obama and has then received numerous awards.
The correlation between success and expertise is in the upper quantile. With that, work towards becoming an expert at something and one day success will storm onto you with tides of wealth, happiness and recognition.
